Using Web Page Templates
All Web Pages have the ability to display in different ways. Templates are used to determine how Web Pages look. Within this web site several Web Page Templates are available to select when creating or modifying a Web Page.
Usefulness of Templates
Templates are very useful in allowing content managers to enter content on Web Pages within a site while maintaining a consistent look-and-feel. How pages are layed out should not be a concern to those entering simple content onto the site. Templates allow users to select how a Web Page can be displayed.
Templates also allow easy modification of an entire site's presentation. By developing a set of new Templates, it is possible to revamp an entire website without having to touch any of the content! Ever!
Template Sections
Web Page Templates have sections that allow editors to place content in predefined areas. Templates typically have sections like the following:
- Title. The title of the Web Page and how the text of the title looks
- Body Text. The body text section of a Web Page is typically the main content section of the page. This contains the majority of the text and may contain links, images, and any other HTML concept as long as the Content Editor allows it.
- Links Section. Web Pages are often used for simple navigation to more detailed content within the same section of the site. Links can be used to automatically generate links for every other Web Page or Folder contained within the current folder a Web Pages exists. This is particularly useful for areas of a site that contantly change and grow.
- Images. Image sections allow editors to link to a photo or upload a new photo into the current Folder to be used within a Web Page. Images of any size can be uploaded into the site and then be selected to display according to a preset image width and height. This makes adding photos to Web Pages that have Image sections on theor templates very simple.
- Blurbs. Blurbs are simple text sections that add understanding to other sections. For example, a Blurb section might exist under an Image section which would give the editor the ability to add a caption of what the photo is, or to give credits, etc.
- Slots. Slots are simple pre-developed sections that typically contain some complex logic that makes maintaining Web Pages easier. For example, a slot for showing all Events that have not expired yet within the entire web site might be available to use. These slots automatically show the proper content based upon developed logic. Slots cannot be configured by editors. They can only be added or removed from Web Pages. Many Web Pages may also use the same slot, making them very reusable within a site.
Selecting Web Page Templates
Templates are selected from the Identity or Web Page Edit tabs of a Web Page. A template may be changed at any time without the content being altered. For example, a simple text Web Page may be uploaded to the site. An editor can easily select a new template and add a photo and caption to the page without modfying any of the body text content.
