Flight track logs are an extremely valuable way to validate soaring forecasts. By comparing IGC track logs against the actual forecast available prior to a flight, we can start to quantify the validity of forecasts in ways never done before.

For example, here's Neville Hulett's 500+ km South African flight from December of 2008. His track (purple) is plotted across the forecast along the track flown. The red line is the predicted top of usable lift.

XC Skies Mobile

XC Skies Mobile provides a trimmed down featured version of XC Skies maps for web-enabled smart phones with full featured browsers. As of Feb 2010, the iPhone is currently supported, with slightly different versions coming for Android/Droid, Nexus One, and any other smart phone that uses a fully web compliant browser.

Users of the mobile application should be familiar with the basics of XC Skies to get the most out of the forecasts.

XC QuickCasts

The XC QuickCast application provides an extremely light bandwidth alternative to interactively exploring the Maps applications. QuickCasts are designed to give users an instant overview of a pre-defined view for a region of interest. QuickCasts combines cross section routes, point forecasts, and area maps in a simple table layout with thumbnails. All image sizes are optimized to be as small as possible. A single URL will automatically show the user virtually everything they want to know about the day without needing to click too much.
